RALEIGH PARK 2017 GARDEN TOUR to feature eight private gardens plus a guided tour of Raleigh Park Elementary organic teaching garden
Portland, OR – The Fir Grove Garden Club and the Raleigh Park School Garden are marking the 12th anniversary of the school’s teaching garden and are celebrating with a spring garden tour on Saturday, June 3, 2017, 10am – 3pm. Enjoy this unusual opportunity to meander the streets of a well-established close-in neighborhood to see a total of nine gardens showing off both professionally designed private gardens as well as those resulting from the artistry of garden lovers. You can enjoy our gardens on foot, by car or, new this year, a suggested bike route. New this year, our neighbor and local garden expert Barbara Ashmun, will open her garden to the public. She will also have copies of her popular new book Love Letters to My Garden. Back by popular demand, archival photos and local history will be featured on the tour as we follow our neighborhood as it morphed from field to farm to golf course to our homes. As always we have some special treats along the way, including two local authors, signed books, advice from Master Gardeners and more.
The gardens are a potpourri of sizes and styles, reflecting the varied interests of their owners. On this tour you will find a heavy emphasis on working with the environment, for example notice the preservation of natural beauty while updating an old garden and bringing northwest natives in wherever possible. All gardens have space for contemplation and habitat for our wild creature friends.
Some gardens have been professionally designed while others are the product of inspiration and owner creativity. All are lovingly tended.
Carol Howell is a neighbor and former teacher and gardener, at home and at the Raleigh Hills School garden. She tells us, quoting Cicero, “If you have a garden and a library you have everything you need”. Carol credits her inspiration to the wit and wisdom of the late Dulcy Mahar. She gave Carol the freedom to imagine and to explore the poetry inherent in a garden and became a dear friend though they met only once.
Our garden tours serve as a fundraiser to help support the Raleigh Park School garden. Perhaps you will begin your tour with this professionally designed garden which serves to teach students about the earth, healthy eating and living. This year's tour is our biggest one yet and there is something for everyone from novice to diehard gardeners alike.
Garden gifts and plants for sale, refreshments will add to the fun. Vern Nelson, “Hungry Gardener” columnist from the Oregonian will be on hand throughout the tour to offer advice about edible landscaping and Master Gardeners will be on site to answer horticultural questions. We also have two authors on this tour, Barbara Ashmun who is "married to her garden" and Carolyn Wood, whose book Tough Girl: An Olympian's Story has garnered much praise including "This memoir could easily become a favorite of American literature teachers and their students."
The early bird ticket price is $20 through day of the tour which includes admittance to all nine gardens. Ticket price will increase to $25 on the day of the tour so sign up early!
Tickets can be purchased through the Tour website at www.raleighparkgardentour.com or ticket forms are available at the West Slope Community Library.
Entry packets, which include the garden guide and map, will be held under the ticket holder’s name on the day of the tour at the Raleigh Park Elementary School, located at 3670 SW 78th Avenue in Portland.
All Proceeds from the Fir Grove Garden Club’s tour will benefit Raleigh Park Elementary School’s learning garden and Raleigh Park Neighborhood to promote education, beautification and community.
