A Many-Gardened Room
“A garden is something to be experienced by walking through it.”

There is no mistaking the Barbara Fealy vision as you approach this garden and enter the flowing natural rooms of the owner's garden, from the weathered wooden fence bordered with sword ferns, evergreen azaleas, flowering fruit trees and shore pines to the brookside sitting area to the meditation courtyards.
From inside the westside gate the garden falls away to Hart Creek, one of many Fanno Creek tributaries that once laced through the fields of our neighborhood. Enjoy the cedar tree-framed-view from under the sheltering eave down the long lawn to an arched bridge. Yews, camellias and boxwood line the south border, a beautiful grape arbor lies to the north. Follow the pathway downhill to discover raised beds for vegetables, rows of blueberries and roses, a whimsical garden shed and chicken coop, and yet another garden room beside the arbor. Stand for a while on any of the little bridges that span the creek and listen to our westside watershed waters.
The path uphill on the south side leads round the house, where curving beds and gravel paths, river rock and moss naturalize every area. An island of lawn off the patio, big enough for croquet, is surrounded by mature camellia, azaleas, rhododendrons and maples to catch the wind and provide privacy. Further along, shade beds overflow with ferns, hellebores, bergenia and low layering hemlock. The intimate aggregate-concrete patio lined with Sylvan brick is vintage Barbara Fealy.
This is a garden of sweeping views and hidden spaces, one that has kept the Fealy use of natural elements from our Pacific Northwest to create private and public garden spaces for creativity, meditation and company.
